‘Bon Voyage’ prompt: Vision of the Future

Welcome to Writer’s Island. You will notice the Island drummers and dancers. We are having a ‘bon voyage’ party!!

This is the week we all sail off to new adventures, and the last week that Writer’s Island will be open and offering writing prompts — at least in the foreseeable future. To everyone who has walked the shores of this Island, you have truly enriched my life. You have brought your thoughts and inspiration from many fascinating places in this wide world, to freely and graciously share. It has been a marvelous experience to have been touched by each of you. You will not be forgotten — so I expect to see much dancing and celebration….

Publishing Writer’s Island has been, since 2007, one of my favorite passions, and it is my hope that it will again be able to be such in the future. Keep your hearts and spirits fluid and flowing and may the current of life course freely through you, to carry you in love, to your dreams. In the spirit of dreams and the future, I offer this as the ‘bon voyage’ Writer’s Island prompt.

••>The Week #25 prompt for 2011 is “VISION OF THE FUTURE”. Pardon my sentimentalism, but I have included a piece of art I created quite a number of years ago for my daughter, whose 39th birthday is next week. It was inspired by a photo taken of her and I in 1979, when she was 7. It is entitled: “A Father’s Love” which is filled with dreams of the future.

So it is simple this week, please meditate on your vision of the future, be it for yourself, or loved one(s), or for the world — then share it with us… or let the image above spark your muse. As always, feel free to go in your own direction with your piece this week. Just let yourself go with whatever it is that moves you to write. .

Relax, respond to the prompt when you’re ready — or just leave a comment to say hi, wish you well!

Bon voyage from the Island — may you always have fair skies, calm seas, and a gentle breeze at your back. ;-)

Week #25 prompt: Threshold

Welcome to Writer’s Island.

As you may or may not know, this is the second to last week that Writer’s Island will be open and offering writing prompts — at least in the foreseeable future. So while we are still here, please consider this prompt in depth, then let inspiration carry you.

When you feel what you’ve written is ready to be read by the other Islanders, just post your link right here in the comments section at the bottom of this post. Please leave whatever expanded comment you wish as a part of your posted link. You can also reply directly to any other comment.

••>The Week #25 prompt for 2011, the penultimate Writer’s Island prompt, is “THRESHOLD”. Tossed in a little 3D image I made for fun.

Think of the many meanings of this word: • the plank, stone, or piece of timber that lies under a door or a gate; • the end or boundary, such as the end of a runway or dock; • the place or point of entering or beginning; • the outset, such as the threshold of a new age; • the point at which a physiological or psychological effect begins to be produced, such as the threshold of pain; • a point or value above which something is true or will take place, and below which it is not or will not; • or the brink, cusp, edge, point, or verge of something… these are a few of the meanings.

Whether you use the actual word or not, meditate on the word threshold, let it spark your muse… or choose to go in your own direction with your piece this week. Just let yourself go with whatever it is that moves you to write. .

Relax, respond to the prompt when you’re ready — or just leave a comment to say hi! As always, welcome to the the Island!!! ;)

Week #24 prompt: Incomparable

Welcome to Writer’s Island.

ANNOUNCEMENT: It has been such a pleasure offering writing prompts since 2007. I’ve ‘met’ some wonderful Islanders in that time, and had the joy to read some great work. But I have been struggling with health lately, and that has introduced some additional challenges into my life. I love to write, and given my current circumstances, I am not able to give my best to my writing, and to Writer’s Island — so it is with heavy heart indeed that I must close the Island, at least for now. The final Writer’s Island prompt of the foreseeable future will publish on Saturday, June 25th, 2011.

I truly hope what I am saying is “until later”, and not farewell — but only time will tell. Please know my wishes are, for each of you, that you always have fair skies, calm seas, and a gentle breeze at your back. Now, please consider this week’s prompt in depth, and as in the past, let inspiration carry you.

When you feel what you’ve written is ready to be read by the other Islanders, just post your link right here in the comments section at the bottom of this post. Please leave whatever expanded comment you wish as a part of your posted link. You can also reply directly to any other comment.

••>The Week #24 prompt for 2011 is “INCOMPARABLE”.

Think of the many meanings of this word, for example: • beyond compare, • inimitable, • unmatched, • nonpareil, • peerless, • unequaled, • unparalleled, • unrivaled, • unsurpassed — these to name a few.

Whether you use the actual word in your piece, or not — meditate on incomparable, then let it spark your muse… or choose to go in your own direction with your piece this week. Just let yourself go with whatever it is that moves you to write.

Relax, respond to the prompt when you’re ready — or just leave a comment to say hi! As always, welcome to the the Island!!! ;)

••>The Week #23 prompt for 2011 is “CONTINGENT”.

Think of the many meanings of this word, for example: • likely but not certain to happen, • possible, • not logically necessary, • empirical, • happening by chance or unforeseen causes, • subject to chance or unseen effects, • unpredictable, • intended for use in circumstances not completely foreseen, • dependent on or conditioned by something else, • determined by free choice — these to name a few.

Whether you use the actual word in your piece, or not — meditate on contingent, then let it spark your muse… or choose to go in your own direction with your piece this week. Just let yourself go with whatever it is that moves you to write.

••>OK, for the Week #22 prompt for 2011, we are going to change pace just a bit and focus strictly on a visual prompt — no word this week.

Please consider this fascinating image above from German surrealist, Michael Maier. How does it make you feel? What comes to mind as you look at it? Do you get an overall impression, or does a particular element stand out for you? What title might you give this dreamlike composition? Perhaps let that title be your prompt. Linger on the image, and then let it inspire you to write.

I will reveal the actual title of this work when I post next week’s prompt #23, but this week let’s allow only your reaction to this artwork to spark your muse… or choose to go in your own direction with your piece this week. Just let yourself go with whatever it is that moves you to write.

Relax, respond to the prompt when you’re ready — or just leave a comment to say hi! As always, welcome to the the Island!!! ;)

••>Just for fun, the Week #21 prompt for 2011 is “SIZZLE”.

Think of the many ways this word can be used, with regard to comment on talent, the weather, a performance, your temper, scene in a movie, food on the BBQ, passage in a book, the sound of cymbals, cooking in the kitchen, rain on a tin roof, shaken maracas, static, an open fire – and certainly others.

Whatever strikes your fancy, let the word sizzle spark your muse… or choose to go in your own direction with your piece this week. Just let yourself go with whatever it is that moves you to write. .

Week #20 prompt: Superstition

Welcome to Writer’s Island.

–––––––––––––––––––––––

NOTE: Before we get to this week’s prompt, I want to take this opportunity to recognize the three individuals who have published the Big Tent Poetry blog for the past year: Carolee Sherwood, Deb Scott, and Jill Crammond. They are folding their tent and calling it quits this weekend. They are talented classy women, and they have put out a fine product every week. I will miss their excellent efforts, and the ‘blogosphere’ will be a little less with the closing of BTP. Thank you Carolee, Deb, and Jill for a job well done, and all the best in the future.

••>Given yesterday was Friday he 13th, the Week #20 prompt for 2011 is “SUPERSTITION”.

Whether we are or are not personally superstitious, we probably each know the typically accepted list of bad omens — black cats, walking under ladders, opening umbrellas indoors, broken mirrors, spilled salt, etc. So today let’s write from the perspective of one of these heralds of bad fortune.

Or, maybe it would be fun to make up your own “bad sign”, like never use ‘lol’ and ‘omg’ in the same text because… or, never brush your hair with your left hand because… then write about that.

Perhaps you want to debunk the notion altogether? Whatever strikes your fancy, let the word superstition spark your muse… or choose to go in your own direction with your piece this week. Just let yourself go with whatever it is that moves you to write. .
