PROMPT and WRITER’S LINK: “Earth”

December 22, 2007

Hello Islanders! Given this is a time of year for many, including myself, to join with family in celebration of the season - this post will serve as the ‘prompt’ for this week and next week. It will also serve as the ‘writer’s link’, so you can post your link here as soon as your piece is complete.

This is December 22nd, the day of Solstice. Owing to the size and atmosphere of our earth, and its remarkable symbiotic relationship with the sun, it is the Winter Solstice in northern hemisphere, and the Summer Solstice in southern hemisphere.

Reflecting on this fascinating and fragile balance, sparked for me, what I feel, is a most appropriate prompt: Earth. I am hoping we will all use this extended 2-week period to write a truly inspired and special piece specifically for this prompt.

Tell us your feelings about this island earth, as it hurtles through space and time. What does it mean to you - how does it resonate with your being? Is it in immanent danger right now? If yes, are we too late to save it? Is all the concern just unjustified paranoia? How mysteriously awesome are the wonders of this planet? Does man have true dominion over earth, or are we quite out of step and balance with Gaia — our mother earth?

What/how has earth endured through the millenniums? Is our earth large or small? Can earth truly be ‘owned’? Is it the only planet to actively support life at this time? What is its significance in light of the plethora of solar systems believed to exist? Maybe you have a poetic vision of earth, of its peoples, of its history, of its future? Maybe a short story will be inspired?

Whatever moves you, please take your time in creating your piece for this prompt. Let’s knock it out of the park!

As soon as you are ready, post your link here to your piece posted on your blog. Remember, post only the link to your work here — not the piece itself… and please make certain your link is accurate.

If you’re new, welcome ashore! More details of ‘How To Be An Islander’ are posted in the sidebar. If you’ve returned, a warm welcome back!

No matter your persuasion, I wish each of you a very happy and safe holiday season — and all the very best for an exceptional new year. The next new prompt will appear here on Saturday, January 5th, 2008, at 12:01 AM U.S. East Coast Time. Until then, have a wonderful time — and may your muse be with you, and your writing inspired! ;)

It’s Tuesday, December 18th, 12:01 AM on the U.S. east coast. It’s time to tell us how you embrace ‘this season’ of celebration and renewal.

Maybe it’s a tradition you carry on, or have started. This may just be another season to you. Whatever — please share with us.

PROMPT: “This Season”

December 14, 2007

Hello Islanders.  This post is going up a couple hours early as I won’t be available later to post it.

Whether you embrace Christmas, Hanukkah, Eid al-Adha, Kwanzaa, Las Posadas, Pongal, St. Nicholas Day, Yalda, Santa Lucia Day, Bodhi, New Years Day, Boxing Day, any of the world’s various Festival Of Lights; or like myself, you celebrate the Solstice — the time of renewal and love at year’s end… this is the season of celebration or observance ’round the world.

So, the fifteenth prompt here on Writers Island is: “This Season”. Please share with us, your fellow islanders, what ‘this season’ of celebration or renewal means to you – however you might embrace it… or not.

Maybe it’s a tradition you carry on, or have started. Perhaps you have a special memory of this season, or this season might be all about family to you, or gifts, or foods, or joy – something humorous, or moving… or regrettably, you may have a sad story. This may just be another season to you. Whatever — share with us, we want to know you a little better.

If you want to write about another topic all together, that is fine – we just want you to share with us what it is that moves you.

Feel free to include recordings of you reading your work — and any photo, artwork, or graphic representation you feel is relevant.

If you’re new to the island, the details for how to become an islander can be found in the right sidebar. To our regular islanders, you know how to navigate the surf — and welcome back!

Everyone, please return here Tuesday, December 18th. A new post will open at 12:01 AM, U.S. East Coast time on that day — for you to place, at your convenience, the link to the piece you’ve written… and which you have posted on your site.

PROMPT: “The Moment”

December 8, 2007

This prompt simply drifted down out of the ether and landed soft at my feet. The next prompt here on the island will be… “The Moment”.

Maybe its the one to remember, or the one you wish you could forget, or the one your currently living in, or the one that changed your life, or the one you’ve always dreamed of, or the one you’ve always feared — perhaps it is the one of your most profound realization… what ever the moment you choose, please share it with us.

So, for the fourteenth Writers Island prompt, think about the major moments of your life, or of your imagined future — and write about the particular moment you’re envisioning, in your poem, prose, short story, essay, or commentary… then post it on your blog. If not about a moment — write about whatever moves you.

Feel free to include recordings of you reading your work — and any photo, artwork, or graphic representation you feel is relevant.

If you’re new to the island, the details for how to become an islander can be found in the right sidebar. To our regular islanders, you know how to navigate the surf — and welcome back!

PROMPT: “The Promise”

December 1, 2007

Thank you to those who expressed your kind concern for my friend. Things are still uncertain, but better than they were. He remains surrounded by caring individuals.

We all had promised each other long ago that when one of us was in need, we would respond. These are remarkable people and I am so very lucky to be among them.

This situation revealed to me what the next prompt should be here on the island… “The Promise”.

So, for the thirteenth Writers Island prompt, think about promises you’ve made — or promises made to you. Was the promise kept, was it broken — what was the result? Maybe it’s a future promise. Will it be kept — yes or no… and why? Perhaps it’s a promise you feel should be made, by you, or someone else.

Share with us about the promise — in your poem, prose, short story, essay, or commentary… then post it on your blog. If not about a promise — write about whatever moves you.

Feel free to include recordings of you reading your work — and any photo, artwork, or graphic representation you feel is relevant.

If you’re new to the island, the details for how to become and islander can be found in the right sidebar. To our regular islanders, you know how to navigate the surf — and welcome back!

Everyone, please return here Tuesday, December 4th. At 12:01 AM, U.S. East Coast time, a new post will be open for you to place, at your convenience, the link to the piece you’ve written — and which you have posted on your site.
