• It only took one week for Britney Spears‘ “Womanizer” to charm its way into chart history after a record-breaking rise from number 96 last week to number one this week on the Billboard Hot 100. Who buys such drivel?

• A Las Vegas club says it plans to host a lookalike contest in honor of the GOP vice presidential nominee. Contestants will be judged on how much they resemble Palin while wearing a swimsuit and how well they debate. Isn’t one Palin quite enough?

• Authorities said relatives of a deceased Tehama County woman cremated her remains on a makeshift barbecue and continued collecting her retirement checks. Sheriff’s Capt. Paul Hosler says investigators are still trying to determine the cause of death. Gee, I wonder… FIRE maybe!

• A McDonald’s cashier called 911 after a Vero Beach drive-thru customer allegedly offered to pay for his meal with marijuana. A deputy spotted the vehicle, found marijuana in the car and arrested its occupant, 27-year-old Shawn Alexander Pannullo. Now that’s some serious munchies!

• Guatemalan Mayan priests once purified a sacred archaeological site to eliminate “bad spirits” after President Bush visited. Actually, that’s perfectly understandable…
