Prompt #1 for 2010 – Messages

Welcome to the re-opening of Writer’s Island. After being away from these shores for a bit more than a year — we’re back… ready to “beach parteeee” and write to our heart’s content!

Remember, new prompt(s) every Saturday, and to make it easy this time around, when what you’ve written is ready to read by the other Islanders, just post your link right here at the bottom of this post — no waiting, no looking for a different place to post your link, and you can leave a comment as a part of your posted link. You can now also reply directly to any other comment.

••> The first official new prompt is: MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE… pretend you found a bottle washed up on the beach here at Writer’s Island. tell us in your words (poem, prose, flash fiction) about this message.

••> A special bonus prompt for this new beginning of Writer’s Island is for former members of the now inactive Read Write Poem site. In your words (poem, prose, flash fiction) write a GOODBYE MESSAGE TO RWP.

You respond to either, or both prompts — or just leave a comment to say hi! Welcome back to the the Island. Pass me some pineapple please, go have yourself a nice cool drink of choice, and let’s have some fun!!! 😉

This is sort of both, and more. .. and less 🙂

I’m so glad you went through with restarting this. I was sad to see RWP die just two months after I got there.

  18. Ahoy matie! Just washed upon the shore. Looking for some poetic treasures. Argh!!

Here is my poem called: “The Message is the Bottle” and an added bonus poem today: “The Loyalty Oath and the Oil to Loathe.”

poem 5/2/10 – greetings from the future! (message in a bottle)

  28. congrats on the first prompt, guys!!!!

    here’s my attempt: dare

    • I should like to have read it;, but lack of password prevented it. I am intrigued that you think there is a need for a password – is it for copyright reasons/fear of spam of what?
      Regards,
      ViV

      • hi, viv! the instructions with my poem encourage people to email me for the password (my email address is in the post, too) as i’m most happy to share it.

      • Yes, Carolee, I read that, but the kerfuffle to get a password, use it etc, put me off. Today my email came back because the address was incomplete (eg gmail.com, or what?) But I’m not a quitter, so please may I have your password?
        ViV
        http://wordpress.com

      • yup. many readers consider a kerfuffle and i lose them. and i’m fine with that.

the reasons i do it are important enough that it’s a risk i take.

happy to explain when you email me. yes, it’s gmail.com. do try again.

  29. I am new to this site, and look forward to writing with you all. Here is my attempt, Message in a Bottle:

    • writersisland

You take your time there De, gettin’ ol’ WhimsyGizmo all ship shape. We don’t want nobody scuttlin’ themselves on the reef. We’ll keep a lantern on the beach for ya in case it’s dark when you land…

    • oh, donald, i had no idea what to expect when i went to your poem with that title. 🙂 thank goodness it was mild. sorry you were surprised by RWP’s end. glad you’re visiting the island.

      • The title to my poems never reflect the truth of content. I figured the “Summer Girl” poem was enough. You know that discretion is the better part of valor. By the way, loved the tat.

  44. Opps, I meant “July Girl”.

  45. Hi. I just added a couple of non-prompt related poems to my blog, and realized they displaced my poem for this prompt from the front page (can you say rooooooookie move?) Here’s the direct link to my message in a bottle poem, SOS:

The Writer’s Island portmaster fixed the link to your poem in this comment post. You had entered the “href” string incorrectly… 😉

  53. Trying again–sent a different link (not the one that’s not working above) a few times, but it still hasn’t appeared here. Let’s see what happens this time….

My message in the bottle is at:

    http://rrosenchang.blogspot.com

    Thanks!

    • writersisland

The first link that was approved by the mr. spamonator (our portmaster) was a different web address. Now they are both cleared to come shore at will…
      😉

  54. Another attempt, assuming multiple bottles are permitted. Cheers.

    Float

    • writersisland

Yes De, multiple posts are always permitted, but sometimes the portmaster gets testy if we try to include two links in one comment post — something about too many people in a boat?… 😉

  55. Hey there, Island master. Did I do that, on accident? Sorry if I did. I’m much more a kayak girl than a high-tech vessel. Navigating the cyber waters isn’t my strong suit. Just happy to have a friendly place to land.

  56. Okay, then; I guess I’m in with Empties at Scrambled, Not Fried.
