Prompt #16 for 2010: Inception

Welcome to Writer’s Island.

New prompt(s) are posted every Saturday. Consider the prompt in depth, then let inspiration carry you. When you feel what you’ve written is ready to be read by the other Islanders, just post your link right here in the comments section at the bottom of this post. Please leave whatever expanded comment you wish as a part of your posted link. You can also reply directly to any other comment.

β€’β€’> This 16th prompt for 2010 is the second MatinΓ©e Muse prompt for the year. The prompt is INCEPTION, from the Leonardo DiCaprio movie of the same title. There are several ways this prompt can inspire.

NOTE: Don’t let this prompt appear difficult. In the following text, I have offered 3 different perspectives you can take, and nearly 30 different elements you can use as your inspiration. Please use the one you find best sparks you to write. Thanks Islanders, and write on… πŸ˜‰

β€’ First, look at the definition of the word. β€œbeginning; a first part; an opening stage of subsequent events; origination; origin; germination; cause; prelude; overture; preliminary; emanation; rise” – looks like lots of fodder there to motivate your muse.

β€’ Second, what might elements of the movie’s plot spark? Maybe the nature of reality… the nature of dreams… how can we differentiate between the two – β€œin real time”… what is the nature of privacy… do we enjoy privacy anymore in this day and age… the nature of paranoia… what impact does technology have on us personally, on our lives now, on our futures… are we progressing as a species/society or regressing — there is much to spark the imagination.

β€’ Finally I offer this image of the spinning top from the movie:

How might this ignite your fire to write? Maybe it’s the nature of balance or precision, the concept of centrifugal force, the perpetual nature of some things, the sense of time running out, the abandon seen in the whirling, or…

So tell us in your words (poem, prose, flash fiction, etc.) the who, what, where, when, why or how regarding INCEPTION — including any visual image you might want to incorporate. So let yourself go with whatever it is that moves you to write… see what you can dream up…

Relax, respond to the prompt when you’re ready — or just leave a comment to say hi! As always, welcome to the the Island!!! πŸ˜‰

  1. In answer to the question at the start of the movie… ‘Did you come here to kill me?’… My answer: I CAME HERE TO WILL YOU

  2. Not an easy one, this. As I have never seen or heard of the film, my contribution will have to be based on the word, or maybe the spinning top – a lovely image. I’m away to think and scribble.

  3. One from the archives that was apropos. A post about what birthed my current MS The Prince of Darkness or How I’ve Spent the Last Three Months

  4. I had something in my mind but when I started it, I went in another direction:

Thank you Jaycee, nice to see you on the Island… πŸ˜‰

      • Thanks, glad to have participated in this one. I thought it was a very wonderful topic to write about. I’ll spend time going through everyone else’s links, especially Anthony above, who you’ve vouched for.

Viv said it was difficult as well Pamela — I thought with the many possible prompt options I had identified, that it would be easy… maybe I offered too many choices… 😐

Thank you for sharing Riika… πŸ˜‰

I thought by offering, in the text of the prompt, 3 different perspectives, and nearly 30 different elements that could be used as inspiration, that this would be an inspiration-rich prompt — and simple to write to. I hadn’t intended it to just be the word Inception… I am sorry the prompt was confusing…

  5. hmm… for starters I have a story I wrote not long ago:

    http://turtlememoir.wordpress.com/2010/07/16/in-the-beginning/

I’ll see what else I can come up with…

an interesting, if a bit challenging, prompt, but thanks!

  6. Whew, this was a TRUE challenge (didn’t see the movie), but I couldn’t rest without doing it. Here it is:

  7. Don’t understand why my post is awaiting moderation. I got the idea from the spinning top. Here’s my poem…

These spam filters have no imagination, if you change even a single letter in how you sign in, and sometimes for no reason at all (except maybe a grumpy spam filter) – it decides I should moderate??

I really don’t pretend to understand it Diane, but I do check frequently because I receive a reasonably prompt email if something is being held. You do not lose your chronological order though, even if you get moderated…

Thank you for sharing work, seeing the movie is optional — but it is an interesting flick ElizaBeth, and showing right now here at our Island Bijou… πŸ˜‰

  9. This is my first time posting here.

I was inspired to write a poem about paranoia. I hope you will read and enjoy.

Please come check out my poem at http://special-k611.blogspot.com/2010/08/paranoia.html

    Thanks, Kristie (Just Me)

  12. Okay, I didn’t think I’d have one, and I do (yay!).

I went to school today to start to ready my classroom. That was an inception of sorts(haven’t seen the movie). My piece arose because I started to question the moment I lose a student’s attention, or do something that offends them. Can I notice it? If I notice the precise moment, maybe we can take a different path. That’s what I started with and then the piece took its own path. Here it is:

Very very cool perspective you’ve touched on Brenda, and how powerful if you can teach yourself to recognize that moment of disconnect… how remarkable it would be for all of us, in our meaningful relationships, if we could be sensitive to that moment — good luck, it’s worth the inquiry… πŸ˜‰

  13. Rob, I have subscribed to the comments in my google reader. However, not even half of those show up there. I don’t know why but thought I would let you now. Can it be fixed from here?

Sorry for writing it here, on this prompt.

Gautami, I must admit I do not know — but my son knows all things internet (it is his career)… I will gladly ask him and let you know what I learn… πŸ˜‰

      Someone needs a hand massage… πŸ˜‰

Tilly, I deal with that a lot, try this — purchase a bottle of 70% wintergreen alcohol at the pharmacy, crush in 14-15 aspirin, shake till dissolved, keep on the shelf and apply topically to your hands… it’s wonderful…

  18. finally here is mine…it all started with the FIRST SUPPER

  19. Well, I linked to an older post originally, said I’d write a new one. Here it is, just under the wire, methinks… πŸ˜‰

  20. Hi Rob, thanks for the wonderful prompt, which truely inspired me, please accept my very late entry.
