Welcome to Writer’s Island.
New prompt(s) are posted every Saturday. Consider the prompt in depth, then let inspiration carry you. When you feel what you’ve written is ready to be read by the other Islanders, just post your link right here in the comments section at the bottom of this post. Please leave whatever expanded comment you wish as a part of your posted link. You can also reply directly to any other comment.
••> This 16th prompt for 2010 is the second Matinée Muse prompt for the year. The prompt is INCEPTION, from the Leonardo DiCaprio movie of the same title. There are several ways this prompt can inspire.
NOTE: Don’t let this prompt appear difficult. In the following text, I have offered 3 different perspectives you can take, and nearly 30 different elements you can use as your inspiration. Please use the one you find best sparks you to write. Thanks Islanders, and write on… 😉
• First, look at the definition of the word. “beginning; a first part; an opening stage of subsequent events; origination; origin; germination; cause; prelude; overture; preliminary; emanation; rise” – looks like lots of fodder there to motivate your muse.
• Second, what might elements of the movie’s plot spark? Maybe the nature of reality… the nature of dreams… how can we differentiate between the two – “in real time”… what is the nature of privacy… do we enjoy privacy anymore in this day and age… the nature of paranoia… what impact does technology have on us personally, on our lives now, on our futures… are we progressing as a species/society or regressing — there is much to spark the imagination.
• Finally I offer this image of the spinning top from the movie:
How might this ignite your fire to write? Maybe it’s the nature of balance or precision, the concept of centrifugal force, the perpetual nature of some things, the sense of time running out, the abandon seen in the whirling, or…
So tell us in your words (poem, prose, flash fiction, etc.) the who, what, where, when, why or how regarding INCEPTION — including any visual image you might want to incorporate. So let yourself go with whatever it is that moves you to write… see what you can dream up…
Relax, respond to the prompt when you’re ready — or just leave a comment to say hi! As always, welcome to the the Island!!! 😉
In answer to the question at the start of the movie… ‘Did you come here to kill me?’… My answer: I CAME HERE TO WILL YOU
Cool perspective on the prompt Stan, great way to get us started this week… 😉
You’ll find mine here:
Thank you for sharing Anthony… 😉
I’ve been struggling to find your poems, Anthony, so was happy to discover this one not too far down. Lovely idea – a beginning person.
Anthony, as you’ve discovered Viv, is a prolific writer, and his work is interesting — so I always get caught up in reading several of his pieces in each post… 😉
Not an easy one, this. As I have never seen or heard of the film, my contribution will have to be based on the word, or maybe the spinning top – a lovely image. I’m away to think and scribble.
I have great faith in you Viv, there are 3 different approaches, and many directions from there you can take this — you will do well… 😉
Your faith in me persuaded me to make a start, with the result that you will find here:
http://vivinfrance.wordpress.com/2010/08/14/inception-for-…ters-island-16/
And now my conscience will let me read everyone else’s contributions.
See, I knew you could do it Viv… 😉
One from the archives that was apropos. A post about what birthed my current MS The Prince of Darkness or How I’ve Spent the Last Three Months
Oh my, that sounds devilish Rebecca…
I had something in my mind but when I started it, I went in another direction:

Thank you for sharing Gautami, it will be interesting to discover where you ended up… 😉
Just posted mine.

Thank you Jaycee, nice to see you on the Island… 😉
Thanks, glad to have participated in this one. I thought it was a very wonderful topic to write about. I’ll spend time going through everyone else’s links, especially Anthony above, who you’ve vouched for.
This was not the easiest prompt for me to write to
but thanks for being here

Viv said it was difficult as well Pamela — I thought with the many possible prompt options I had identified, that it would be easy… maybe I offered too many choices… 😐
http://riikainfinityy.com/2010/08/15/inception/
This is a tough one, I hope this will work XD
Thank you for sharing Riika… 😉
I thought by offering, in the text of the prompt, 3 different perspectives, and nearly 30 different elements that could be used as inspiration, that this would be an inspiration-rich prompt — and simple to write to. I hadn’t intended it to just be the word Inception… I am sorry the prompt was confusing…
Haha maybe for me, too many is kinda confusing, don’t know where to start looking at but I am glad I make it somehow;D
Here’s my poem based to the twirling top!

Hi Diane, the top is a good choice – thank you for sharing your work… 😉
Very odd that the name “Diladi” popped up here. It is me — Diane Truswell here. Ghosts at work!
We ain’t ‘fraid ‘o no ghosts — we just call the Island Ghostbusters Diane… 😉
hmm… for starters I have a story I wrote not long ago:
http://turtlememoir.wordpress.com/2010/07/16/in-the-beginning/
I’ll see what else I can come up with…
an interesting, if a bit challenging, prompt, but thanks!
Cool GW, I hope you do have a go at it — and thank you for sharing this piece… 😉
could not sign in
I like what you wrote!
Pamela
hey thanks! just noticed your response…
Great post… Never be afraid of asking questions…
Thank you!
Whew, this was a TRUE challenge (didn’t see the movie), but I couldn’t rest without doing it. Here it is:

Good for you Mary, bravo for responding… 😉
Don’t understand why my post is awaiting moderation. I got the idea from the spinning top. Here’s my poem…
http://troublebeingstrong.blogspot.com/2010/08/whirling-planets.html
These spam filters have no imagination, if you change even a single letter in how you sign in, and sometimes for no reason at all (except maybe a grumpy spam filter) – it decides I should moderate??
I really don’t pretend to understand it Diane, but I do check frequently because I receive a reasonably prompt email if something is being held. You do not lose your chronological order though, even if you get moderated…
😉
Also, just clarifying that this is Diane T for anyone who thinks I am a new person.
A few more days on the Island Diane, and you’ll be like ‘new’… 😉
This is about beginnings (I didn’t see the moive):
Avoiding A Cart and A Horse (an older post)
Elizabeth
Thank you for sharing work, seeing the movie is optional — but it is an interesting flick ElizaBeth, and showing right now here at our Island Bijou… 😉
…life — spinning like a top: Old Man’s Prayer
Old man, who, you? Not you Rob — high mileage perhaps… 😉
This is my first time posting here.
I was inspired to write a poem about paranoia. I hope you will read and enjoy.
Please come check out my poem at http://special-k611.blogspot.com/2010/08/paranoia.html
Thanks, Kristie (Just Me)
Kristie, welcome to Writer’s Island, and what a great take on the prompt, clearly inspired by the movie — very cool, thank you for sharing this work… 😉
Ahh, I’ve missed the sandy shore…
Thank you for the great inspiration!
– Dina
Oh dear, looks like you swam to shore, thanks for the extra effort to share this — you can lie on the beach and dry out… 😉
This was a fun one. I got two posted for this one, and they can be found at the link below. Thanks for the prompt!

-Weasel =)
You are welcome, my sincere pleasure Weasel — how cool that you went for two… 😉
Okay, I didn’t think I’d have one, and I do (yay!).
I went to school today to start to ready my classroom. That was an inception of sorts(haven’t seen the movie). My piece arose because I started to question the moment I lose a student’s attention, or do something that offends them. Can I notice it? If I notice the precise moment, maybe we can take a different path. That’s what I started with and then the piece took its own path. Here it is:

Very very cool perspective you’ve touched on Brenda, and how powerful if you can teach yourself to recognize that moment of disconnect… how remarkable it would be for all of us, in our meaningful relationships, if we could be sensitive to that moment — good luck, it’s worth the inquiry… 😉
Rob, I have subscribed to the comments in my google reader. However, not even half of those show up there. I don’t know why but thought I would let you now. Can it be fixed from here?
Sorry for writing it here, on this prompt.
Gautami, I must admit I do not know — but my son knows all things internet (it is his career)… I will gladly ask him and let you know what I learn… 😉

A sort-of try at some sort-of philosophy!
Brenda, getting philosophical — very cool… I have the feeling you can be quite the philosopher… 😉
I have opposed it From The Outset at Scrambled, Not Fried.
Ron, always so nice to find you on the beach — thanks for coming ashore… 😉
Wrote something called
inception
Love the title Irene — thanks for joining the beach party… 😉
When I was writing this, the photo of that top came into my mind, so I added it into the poem
the summer garland
Thanks for working us into your series Barbara — and sharing it here on the Island… 😉
Here’s mine: http://thelaughinghousewife.wordpress.com/2010/08/16/a-painter-pictures-a-thousand-words
Apologies: my fingers are cramped from painting all day so I won’t be commenting on any one’s poem until tomorrow.
Someone needs a hand massage… 😉
Tilly, I deal with that a lot, try this — purchase a bottle of 70% wintergreen alcohol at the pharmacy, crush in 14-15 aspirin, shake till dissolved, keep on the shelf and apply topically to your hands… it’s wonderful…
Sounds good, thanks! TBH, mine is a one off because I was holding a small paint roller all day. But I’ll file it away under ‘useful remedies for decrepitude’. 🙂
🙂 …Tilly
Thanks for the prompt, here’s mine: http://nicolabatty.blogspot.com/2010/08/writers-island-inception.html
You are welcome Nicola… 😉
finally here is mine…it all started with the FIRST SUPPER
http://waynepitchko.blogspot.com/2010/08/first-supper.html
Sounds intriguing Wayne… 😉
Well, I linked to an older post originally, said I’d write a new one. Here it is, just under the wire, methinks… 😉
http://turtlememoir.wordpress.com/2010/08/20/new-beginning/
Thank you GW for bringing a ‘fresh’ offering… 😉
Hi Rob, thanks for the wonderful prompt, which truely inspired me, please accept my very late entry.

Andy, always wonderful to see you on the beach… 😉
