Prompt #18 for 2010: If Only…

Welcome to Writer’s Island.

New prompt(s) are posted every Saturday. Consider the prompt in depth, then let inspiration carry you. When you feel what you’ve written is ready to be read by the other Islanders, just post your link right here in the comments section at the bottom of this post. Please leave whatever expanded comment you wish as a part of your posted link. You can also reply directly to any other comment.

β€’β€’> The eighteenth prompt for 2010 is: IF ONLY… How many ways can one go with that short phrase? If only…: …I’d been there …you’d been here …you could have seen …I ruled the world …I had listened …you had listened …it were up to me …I hadn’t …I would have …you knew …you could see …time stood still …I could change …it had been different …I could remember — I think you get the picture, the ways to continue the phrase “if only” are seemingly endless. For this prompt, pick one and go with it.

So please consider the short phrase, and tell us in your words (poem, prose, flash fiction, etc.) the who, what, where, when, why or how regarding if only… — include any visual image you might want to incorporate, and let yourself go with whatever it is that moves you to write…

Relax, respond to the prompt when you’re ready — or just leave a comment to say hi! As always, welcome to the the Island!!! πŸ˜‰

  1. I posted a piece of microfiction with this title a while back. Are we permitted to repeat? (I have a busy week this week)

Please do reprise it Viv, some may have missed it first time around — and if you are overcome with fresh inspiration later during your whirlwind, please post that as well… as is true for all Islanders, it’s always what works for you on the Island — we just enjoy your visits… πŸ˜‰

  4. If we only we could change that which seems so unfair or has come too soon…

  5. My apologies. My puter is having issues, so it might take me a bit of time to get back and read everyone else’s responses. I’m slow, puter is definitely slower today.

  6. This is my first time here.

Instead of repeating “if only,” it felt right to use the repetition of “it’s okay.” Yes, you may have many wishes and desires, but it’s okay if you can’t have them, it’s okay to feel alone, it’s okay to feel helpless.
