Week #24 prompt: Incomparable

Welcome to Writer’s Island.

ANNOUNCEMENT: It has been such a pleasure offering writing prompts since 2007. I’ve ‘met’ some wonderful Islanders in that time, and had the joy to read some great work. But I have been struggling with health lately, and that has introduced some additional challenges into my life. I love to write, and given my current circumstances, I am not able to give my best to my writing, and to Writer’s Island — so it is with heavy heart indeed that I must close the Island, at least for now. The final Writer’s Island prompt of the foreseeable future will publish on Saturday, June 25th, 2011.

I truly hope what I am saying is “until later”, and not farewell — but only time will tell. Please know my wishes are, for each of you, that you always have fair skies, calm seas, and a gentle breeze at your back. Now, please consider this week’s prompt in depth, and as in the past, let inspiration carry you.

When you feel what you’ve written is ready to be read by the other Islanders, just post your link right here in the comments section at the bottom of this post. Please leave whatever expanded comment you wish as a part of your posted link. You can also reply directly to any other comment.

••>The Week #24 prompt for 2011 is “INCOMPARABLE”.

Think of the many meanings of this word, for example: • beyond compare, • inimitable, • unmatched, • nonpareil, • peerless, • unequaled, • unparalleled, • unrivaled, • unsurpassed — these to name a few.

Whether you use the actual word in your piece, or not — meditate on incomparable, then let it spark your muse… or choose to go in your own direction with your piece this week. Just let yourself go with whatever it is that moves you to write.

Relax, respond to the prompt when you’re ready — or just leave a comment to say hi! As always, welcome to the the Island!!! 😉

You can now also reply directly to any other comment.

••> The first official new prompt is: MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE… pretend you found a bottle washed up on the beach here at Writer’s Island. tell us in your words (poem, prose, flash fiction) about this message.

Amazing future musical event…

Earlier this year PBS announced the production of a major new television series entitled: ON RECORD: THE SOUNDTRACK OF OUR LIVES. The eight-hour series will trace the history of recorded music and its impact on popular culture. Featuring hundreds of artists from all genres of music, it will air nationally in the near future as a primetime series.

Sir George Martin, legendary producer of the Beatles, will host. Two-time Academy Award-winning actor Kevin Spacey will narrate.

This television series is an extensive educational outreach initiative, and will include an upcoming companion Website on, a companion CD box-set, a 12-hour DVD box set, and a comprehensive book. It will also be presented as a multi-genre worldwide radio show, and be broadcast globally via the internet.

This is a project I have been developing for over five years,” said Sir George Martin, recipient of the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and producer of more than 50 number-one hit records. “I am just thrilled that PBS has joined as our primetime broadcaster. ON RECORD affords me the opportunity to tell a story that has never been told in such a comprehensive way. Music is the only common thread and universal language that binds us together, regardless of race, nationality, age or income. And recorded music is how we experience it and what makes it accessible.”

“I’m delighted to be a part of this remarkable, definitive series for PBS,” said Spacey. “ON RECORD illustrates how in a little more than a century recording technology has moved from wax cylinders to digital downloads. These extraordinary changes have come to define not only music, but who we are as individuals and as a society.”

ON RECORD will feature artists from all genres of music including pop, jazz, classical, R&B, folk, rock and country. Told as a narrative tapestry weaving the words of today’s living legends with memorable musical moments, landmark cultural events and inspiring inventions/innovations. The production will feature new interviews with top music icons and legends, historic archival performances and never-before-seen footage.

Hundreds of artists will be featured, including the Beatles, Frank Sinatra, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin, Benny Goodman, Quincy Jones, Joni Mitchell, Elton John, B.B. King, Alison Krauss, Paul McCartney, Les Paul, Paul Simon, Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, the Carter Family, Bessie Smith, Robert Johnson, Enrico Caruso, Luciano Pavarotti, Muddy Waters, Stevie Wonder, Peter, Paul & Mary, Woody Guthrie, John Denver, Loretta Lynn, Buddy Holly, Leadbelly, Pete Seeger, Jay-Z, the Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, Ella Fitzgerald and scores of others.

ON RECORD should prove to be a fascinating, informative, and highly entertaining history-making event. Bravo to Sir George Martin and PBS!

This week’s issue delayed by exhaustion

Regrettably I have been ill for nearly a week, but better today, Friday 10/10. I will be launching the official ‘First Edition’ of Writer’s Island Journals later this afternoon.

The past month has been a wonderful blurrrrrr… My son got married; my daughter, whom I hadn’t seen in a year, came to visit; my wife’s parents were here for their annual two-week visit; and my new in-laws extended their stay following the wedding.

After this exquisite chaos I came down with a cold (exhaustion) — but I’m mending.

Also, requests for my design and copy writing services have increased substantially, placing elevated demand on my time. This has caused me to rethink the reality of my ability to adhere to a specific publication day and time for WIJ each week. The added editorial components of WIJ make it a more time-intensive one-man endeavor than was the original Writers Island.

So, I am still wholly committed to publishing WIJ each week. Each issue will release mid-week, but with a flexible day and time — certainly each will be on-line by Friday.

I appreciate your understanding and patience in this matter.

That said, I’ll now get back to getting this week’s release complete and online ASAP today.

I’m pleased to be publishing again

Hello all…

This is my “official” inaugural post on Writer’s Island Journals. I am pleased to be publishing again, and honored you have chosen to visit my new site. I will, for the time being, retain as the internet address for Writer’s Island Journals.

WIJ will be published weekly, each Wednesday at 12:01 AM, U.S. Pacific Coast Time.

Each publication will reflect my residing state of mind, as it may have been impacted by personal, local, regional, national, and international events – both current and past. Each publication may include editorial, pictorial, topical, philosophical, and/or contemporary cultural features.

Each publication will also include a prompt called a “Creative Catalyst” to which you are invited to respond in any form of creative expression you wish.

You are always invited to comment freely on any and all articles/posts which are published in Writer’s Island Journals.

I foresee WIJ consistently evolving as it progresses, so stay in touch and see what unfolds.

So until next Wednesday, farewell from the island — and may your seas be ever calm, and the wind always at your back.
